Pizzoli is a picturesque town nestled in the upper Aterno Valley, harmoniously nestled between the hills of L'Aquila and the slopes of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The sixteenth-century Castle of L'Aquila is one of the largest, best-preserved buildings of modern military architecture in Europe.

This small town is actually the most populous hamlet of Borgorose. The old village still maintains its medieval matrix intact, with the castle and the circular tower clearly visible. From here several paths start within the Duchess Mountains. In the small town there is also an archeology museum dedicated to the ancient Equi people.

Impressive Renaissance fortifications

The Rivera Castle, despite what the name might suggest, is not a fortified medieval structure, but a palace of the family of the noble Rivera dukes of Aquila. The 2009 earthquake damaged it, but the recovery works have had excellent effects.

The sixteenth century castle, also known as Spanish Fortress, is a fortress built during the military strengthening of the territory which took place during the Spanish domination in southern Italy (early sixteenth century). Despite the reason for which it was built, the sixteenth-century castle was never used for war purposes, but went from being the residence of the Spanish governor to accommodation for soldiers before being declared a national monument in 1902.
