The Bornhöveder See is located on the western border of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, north of Bornhöved. It is 71 hectares in size and up to 14.3 meters deep. It is part of the Bornhöveder lake chain, which consists of a total of 6 lakes and is also part of the Wankendorfer lake district. The Bornhöveder See is connected to the adjacent Schmalensee by a branch canal about 100m long. The old Schwentine flows through the lake and ultimately flows into the Kiel Fjord. True, it's nice for swimming, but unfortunately it's in a shady spot. So it's probably more of a dog-bathing spot.

Like a string of pearls, more than two dozen fish ponds lie along the lake's shore. The ponds are protected from hungry herons with nets.

Private fish farmers run a fish farm here, and the fish can be purchased fresh or smoked on site.
