Seedorf Castle is a great photo opportunity. It's privately owned, and therefore neither tours nor entry to the entire complex are permitted. It's a shame, but also understandable.

A bit out of the way but very nice "castle", which is actually the former manor house of the Seedorf estate on the Schaalsee.

Gadebusch Castle is a magnificent Renaissance building and a typical example of the North German brick Renaissance. After an eventful history, the castle has belonged to the city of Gadebusch since 2017. Now, after many years of vacancy, it is finally to be renovated and used by the State Music Academy.

A Slavic ring wall as a castle stood on the site, with a first mention in the 8th century. "In 1181 the castle was destroyed by the German troops of Heinrich the Lion and later it was rebuilt as a Count's Ratzeburg castle. Since the beginning of the 13th century, Mecklenburg princes or their branch lines resided at the castle. The castle was given its present form at the instigation of Duke Christoph von Mecklenburg by the court architect Christoph Haubitz, who converted the castle into a renaissance castle in 1570/71. Christoph Haubitz, who had already served under Duke Johann Albrecht in 1549, built this castle in the "Johann Albrecht style" like the prince's court in Wismar and the old part of the lake side of the Schwerin castle. This architectural style is characterized by facade decorations with terracottas, which were made in the famous Lübeck workshop of the Dutchman Statius von Düren. On the staircase (Wendelstein) you can see some Hanseatic coats of arms and on the main building you can find religious representations and medallions with half-length portrait of German princes and women in Renaissance costumes. In 1878/79 the main building was converted into a district court. In 1903/04 the castle was restored and damaged terracottas were replaced with new ones. From 1949 the castle was used as a boarding school for the extended high school, later also as a kindergarten and archive for the city. In 1957 a local history museum was set up in the former farm building of the castle. In 1996 the castle was advertised for sale by the Federal Property Office and sold in 1999. very nice and well maintained castle directly at the Seedorfer Küchensee. Unfortunately, the castle is not accessible.
