Gadebusch Castle is a magnificent Renaissance building and a typical example of the North German brick Renaissance. After an eventful history, the castle has belonged to the city of Gadebusch since 2017. Now, after many years of vacancy, it is finally to be renovated and used by the State Music Academy.

Gadebusch Castle stands on the site of a Slavic rampart from the eighth century. In the 13th century a castle and keep was built, which became one of the main residences of the Principality of Mecklenburg.
The current castle was built between 1571 and 1573 by Christoph von Mecklenburg, the first Protestant ruler of the previously Catholic diocese of Ratzeburg.
