As part of the River Landscape 2024/2025 project, the Brandenburg Friends of Nature conducted an excursion to the oxbow junction near Breese with Jens Martin, a specialist at the State Office for the Environment. The Stepenitz is a key landscape component of the Prignitz region and a major, largely near-natural tributary of the Elbe. Between Perleberg and its confluence with the Elbe near Wittenberge, the Stepenitz is relatively structurally poor. As compensatory measures for the dike construction, two oxbows near Breese were connected in 2023 to improve the structural diversity at this location. Jens Martin explained the importance of river restoration and presented the measures implemented.

Simply wonderful to let it roll and have a wide view.

A nice little brackish with a large dry oak on the edge. A nice photo opportunity, especially at sunrise or sunset. Often you can also see swans on the brackish. The brackish is right next to the Elbe cycle path between Pevestorf and Schnackenburg, you only have to climb the dike to take a look at it (the cycle path runs on the other side of the dike, so you cannot see the brackish directly from the cycle path).

A nice and quiet place for a break, e.g. when you are on the bike path from Gartow to Schnackenburg. There are two wooden benches here that you can rest on. From there you have a nice view of a brackish brackish (mostly swans can be seen) and over the former border strip between the FRG and the former GDR (nowadays the border between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt is located here).

Wonderful peace away from the road and ideal for a break

The swan pond is located on the western edge outside the Wittenberg cemetery in a small park.

Just when I wanted to leave Wise, I discovered a sign with the reference to this wetland biotope and set off on the search. The wetland biotope was not marked on any map. I was pleasantly surprised when the biotope was visible. It is not very big, but clean and well maintained. Benches invite you to linger. At the beginning of July 2018 (the time of my visit) the water lilies were in bloom.
