There are several boardwalks that lead directly to the crater water. It is very nice to sit on the jetty and listen to the waves splashing on the shore.

The enchanting Meerfelder Maar lies in the middle of the largest Maar funnel in the Eifel. This maar is at least 30,000 years old and takes up about half the space of the maar funnel. The idyllic village of Meerfeld nestles against the steep southern slopes of the other half.

Today we parked at it and ran a 5km lap through the Gerolsteiner Staatswald. On the way back towards the car we passed the pond again and an angler had just caught a big fish.
