The Maarsee in the Meerfelder Maar is not circular but a semicircle, because the southern part of the Maars is not filled with water. Here lies the small village Meerfeld within the Maars. Especially towards the north, the maar is bounded by a steep slope more than 150 meters high. The trail directly on the northern shore below the slope is very beautiful and should be committed.

The enchanting Meerfelder Maar lies in the middle of the largest Maar funnel in the Eifel. This maar is at least 30,000 years old and takes up about half the space of the maar funnel. The idyllic village of Meerfeld nestles against the steep southern slopes of the other half.

The crater has an extent of 1400 m in east-west and 1200 m in north-south direction and is thus about 125 ha in size.
The highest crater rim elevation is on the north side at about 516 meters above sea level. Here is a 12 m high wooden lookout tower - the Landesblick. About half of the Maarkessel is taken today by the Maarsee. The village Meerfeld is located on the southern edge within the cauldron.

The Meerfelder Maar is a maar in the village of Meerfeld not far from the town of Manderscheid in the Eifel in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich. Since 1986, the maar with its periodically wet peripheral areas and the deciduous forest in the area of the maar basin has been a nature reserve. The maar has a minimum age of 30,000 years and, according to the latest findings, is probably even 40,000 years old. It was formed by a massive subterranean phreatomagmatic explosion triggered when hot magma encounters a water-rich rock stratum as it rises. The surrounding rocks are shattered by the explosively evaporating water and some of them are thrown upwards. The resulting cavity is filled with rock again and a slump funnel is formed on the surface. The magma chamber from which the magma rose is about 2000 to 6000 m below the Meerfelder Maar.
Very nice hiking trails around the lake and a lot of nature. Great.
