"This pond, which has existed since at least 1575, was originally used for washing sheep. In 1830 it was designated as the only bathing area - initially only for men and boys. In 1877 a modest bathing and swimming facility was completed. From 1890 women were also allowed access. In 1927 a diving tower was even built. In 1959/60 the pool was replaced by a new outdoor pool at Kirchweihplatz. The area around the pond now serves as a municipal campsite." (Source: Wugwiki)

The Bechthaler Weiher is located in the idyllic Anlautertal below the castle ruins, approx. 300 m as the crow flies east of Bechthal. The Anlauter flows past on the south side. The water area is approximately 1.5 hectares and has an average depth of 2 meters. Wooden beams lead across the water for balancing purposes and immediately separate the non-swimmer and swimmer areas. Next to the pond there is a playground for children and it is possible to camp there after prior registration. https://www.naturpark-altmuehltal.de/freizeit/a-z/bechthaler_weiher-597/

From wugwiki.de: The pond was created in 1981 as a rainwater retention basin below the Aumühle. The Stadtbach, which is piped from here today, flows through the city and comes out again as the Brühlbach just before it flows into the [Schwäbische Rezat]. The Aumühle was first mentioned in 1250 (one of the oldest mentions of a Weißenburg building). Before the Aumühlweiher was created, there was an allotment garden here, which was moved to near the Hohenmühle. The pond is a popular ice rink in winter.

The Fossa Carolina (also called the Karlsgraben) was a canal construction project by Charlemagne in order to create a navigable connection between the river system of the Rhine and the Danube for the ships of the time. A point between the Swabian Rezat, which is part of the Rhine river system, and the Altmühl, which flows into the Danube, where the two rivers approach each other within 1800 meters, proved to be suitable for crossing the main European watershed. While scientists were of the opinion years ago that the canal was completely navigable, since the beginning of the archaeological investigations in 2012 there have been increasing indications that the construction work had been canceled and the canal was not completed.

The European valley watershed is located near the Karlsgraben in the direction of Weißenburg at the old Grönhart train station. At 419 m above sea level, the water flows south into the Altmühl and north into the Swabian Rezat. You can do it yourself with a pump.

One of the greatest technical cultural monuments of the early Middle Ages: the Fossa Carolina (Charles' Ditch). Charlemagne had a 3,000-meter-long canal dug here in around 793 to enable ships to travel comfortably to the southeast of his empire. A 500-meter-long stretch of water and adjoining earthen ramparts bear witness to the first attempt to connect the Rhine, Main and Danube by a waterway. The square invites you to linger, with beautiful display boards, seating areas and public toilets - practically everything is there.

One of the greatest technical cultural monuments of the early Middle Ages: the Fossa Carolina (the Karlsgraben). Around the year 793, Charlemagne had a canal roughly 3000 m long excavated in order to be able to sail comfortably in the southeast of his empire. A water surface that is still 500 m long today and the subsequent earth walls testify to the first attempt to connect the Rhine, Main and Danube by a waterway. The place invites you to linger, beautiful display boards, seating groups and public toilets, almost everything available.
