The functions of Lake Altmühl in Bavaria are diverse: It serves to regulate water management, as a temporary reservoir for the Danube-Main system, to raise the Altmühl's low water levels, and for flood protection. At the same time, it is an important destination for tourism and recreation, offering activities such as sailing, swimming, and cycling, as well as an important sanctuary for waterfowl, particularly the "Bird Island" in the north of the lake. The cycle path around the lake is largely separated from pedestrians. Almost 100% paved. There are three lake centers with numerous restaurants.

The Großer Brombachsee is a reservoir in the south of Middle Franconia and, together with its two dams, the Kleiner Brombachsee and Igelsbachsee, forms the Brombachsee. Inaugurated in 2000, it is the largest reservoir in the Franconian Lake District and the largest still body of water in Franconia.
