    One of the greatest technical cultural monuments of the early Middle Ages: the Fossa Carolina (Charles' Ditch). Charlemagne had a 3,000-meter-long canal dug here in around 793 to enable ships to travel comfortably to the southeast of his empire. A 500-meter-long stretch of water and adjoining earthen ramparts bear witness to the first attempt to connect the Rhine, Main and Danube by a waterway. The square invites you to linger, with beautiful display boards, seating areas and public toilets - practically everything is there.

      On the order of Charles d. Large 793 built canal between the Swabian Rezat and the Altmühl - and thus first connection between Rhine and Danube. (Later connections: Ludwigs Canal, Main-Danube Canal). The fossa carolina is said to have been originally about 3000m long; Today, only a small part of it is to be visited in mostly wooded terrain.

            One of the largest technical cultural monuments of the early Middle Ages lies between Altmühl and Rezat near the village of Graben: This Fossa Carolina, also known as Karlsgraben, is one of the "100 most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria", selected by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment.

            What can be seen today at Graben von Fossa Carolina testifies to one of the largest engineering-geological construction projects of the Middle Ages. It is probably the most important ground monument from the Carolingian period in Franconia.
