The small-surface-area, roughly circular (approx. 50 m in diameter) and deep (approx. 10 m) Feneketlen Lake is not situated in a volcanic crater, but in a crater formed by a gas eruption in late December 1961. Natural gas burst to the surface from the depths with elemental force, bringing muddy water and rock debris with it. The gas, roaring at the speed of sound, ignited due to friction against the steel equipment and at times burned with flames reaching 40 meters high. The drilling rig “melted together” and sank into the depths, and the trees surrounding the installation caught fire and dried out. The eruption later ceased on its own, leaving behind a massive crater, which was gradually filled by underground waters and eventually formed into a lake.

Its original function was as an oat silo tower; that is, it was used to store oats and other grain feed. It was commissioned by Friedrich Boxberg between 1830 and 1832, and represents a unique type of building in Mezőhegyes.

It's an easy ride from the beatiful Kőrös rivers to one of the biggest residences of the late Wenckheim family. It goes through the main street of Békéscsaba on a cozy bicycle road with cafés, small rivers, cultural events and exhibitions (it's worth visiting the Munkácsy museum).

Wenckheim Castle Gerla is a historically significant Romantic-Baroque mansion, crafted by Miklós Ybl and built for the Wenckheim family. Despite its architectural beauty and original chapel restoration, much of it stands in a dilapidated, privately owned state. Grassroots preservation efforts and potential adaptive reuse provide hope, but major funding and commitment will be essential to bring it back to life. It can be reached via several hiking trails from both Békéscsaba and Gyula, and there is also a well-developed cycling path leading here.

The park is accessible via multiple hiking routes from both Békéscsaba and Gyula, and a well-maintained bike path also leads directly to it. Forest Trails & Hiking Routes: Three marked trails suitable for walking, cycling, or even riding in a horse-drawn carriage. The Csabai Circular Trail passes through, and informational maps guide you through diverse tree species like red-beech, swamp oak, and the county’s largest ironwood Historic Park Pond: The restored old lakeside promenade and park pond lie near the romantic ruins of the Széchényi–Wenckheim Mansion—this setting enhances the park’s nostalgic charm.

The Weinckheim Castle in Szabadkígyós is one of the most beautiful hiking spots in the Alföld. It can be approached from the direction of Békéscsaba on a high-quality bicycle path.

A castle that has been derelict since the war, which only reminds of its former self in details. The park and lake with beautiful trees around it is worth a walk.
