The heathland, over 9 km long and 1 km wide, lies on the private firing range of the Rheinmetall company, where weapons are tested. The area is barely accessible and, outside of firing range operations, may only be entered or driven on the red and white marked paths. Despite its military use, rare animal species have found refuge here.

The nature reserve covers a total area of 450 hectares. The reserve is characterized by open to semi-open wet grassland on fens, heathland and raised bog habitats, dry sandy heathland on inland sands, and wet, bog, and oak forests along the Gerdau stream. The eastern half of the area is part of a private shooting range. Birdwatching is possible at the reservoir.

You should pay attention to the signs and dates when you can drive through here. And just stay on the path!

The path is very rocky and sandy in places. Luckily had wide maturity.

The small observation platform can be reached via a short bridge over the drain of the reservoir and provides a great overview of the lake.
