It really has an Eastern European charm. The cityscape of Vidin transported me back 30 years. Only it was cleaner.

Lovely city centre and the Istanbul gate it a good photo opportunity if heading to Istanbul. Road out east can get busy especially when out of the city but hang on as you should take the turn off along the Danube path and things will get better

Belogradchik Fortress is an ancient fortress on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains. It is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Bulgaria and a cultural monument of national importance. The original fortress was built between the 1st and 3rd centuries, when the region was part of the Roman Empire. The surrounding rock formations served as natural protection. Fortified walls were practically only built on the northwest and southeast sides, as the courtyard was surrounded on the other sides by cliffs up to 70 meters high. Originally, Belogradchik Fortress served as a surveillance facility rather than a purely defensive one. The highest peak in Serbia. You can reach it from Bulgaria or Serbia. From the Bulgarian side there are two ways to the summit. A normal path (which is pretty easy) and one that is quite strenuous and overgrown (you have to make your own way through the bushes and trees). The view from the top is sooooo beautiful. There are also a lot of hikers from Serbia there.
