The landscape of the national park is characterized by pine forests, heathland and moors. The moors were formed due to the terracing of the area sloping from east to west, which is caused by small horsts and geological trenches. The two largest moor lakes, called “vennen” in Dutch, are the “Elfenmeer” and the “Rolvennen” lake.

With a little muscle power you can move this ferry to the other bank 😅

A detour to the dunes and sandy paths is also worth it. However, rather unsuitable by bike. Here you can only push your bike.

However, the Maasduinen, to which the area belongs, are more difficult to drive on, especially with bikes with narrow tires, and are very sandy. Hiking or pushing bikes gives you fitness. Unique nature experience, especially in rainy times (lakes are full) or in autumn when the heather is in bloom. However, the official and marked cycle paths (junction system) are easy to use. Leukermeer and Reindersmeer are a highlight, especially the bird life.
