Turfkoelen lies in an old arm of the Roer River. It is a fen that was created around 1850 through peat extraction. The southern half of the eleven hectares is managed by Het Limburgs Landschap, the northern half by the municipality of Roerdalen. The fen, surrounded by swamp forest, is home to numerous unique species. The area is particularly important for dragonflies. One of the special features is the spotted darter, a rare species confined to only a few areas in the Netherlands. The yellow spots on the sides of its abdomen are a key characteristic. The whole area is actually a swamp and should only be entered with the utmost caution.

The Oolderplas is a former quarry lake with a depth of up to 37 metres.

Currently there is a tendency towards flooding, pack good shoes or rubber boots

The very large lake has a maximum depth of 32 meters and has hardly any aquatic plants. The lake is a wintering area for water birds: Red-backed diver, red-throated diver and cormorant are observed there.

The Lange Vlieter is a lake that was created by gravel mining and is located next to the Boschmolenplas. This lake is also used as a drinking water lake. The Lange Vlieter serves as a reservoir for the production of drinking water. A beautiful walking route and a cycling path runs along the Lange Vlieter, the Boschmolenplas and the Polderplas.

In the middle of the 19th century, peat was extracted from this place, which created the fen. The Turfkoelen is rich in special animals, including the dragonfly. There are unique species, such as the spotted glossy dragonfly. Do you see the dragonfly flying today?

The Maasplassen extend over a vast area of approximately 3,000 hectares, consisting of a network of lakes, ponds and canals created by gravel extraction. With clear blue water and surrounded by lush green banks, the Maasplassen offer a beautiful backdrop for all kinds of activities.
