The view of the lakes, from the ridge, is incredible so be sure to allow plenty of time for breaks. It's a demanding hike so you definitely need to be sure-footed. If you hike the entire ridge, hopefully you'll find a place to stay overnight in Mermurubu.

Of Snøhetta's major summits, Stortoppen is the tallest, towering to 2,286 metres (7,500 ft), making it the highest mountain in Norway outside Jotunheimen. The views from the summit are sensational, with many of the nation’s most celebrated mountain ranges clearly visible on a good day. It's most often ascended from Snøheim or Reinheim and the hike along its east ridge is rocky, tough but not overly technical. It can also be ascended from Åmotdalshytta via its broad, north-west shoulder.

Unfortunately, I have a fear of heights, and this section was quite challenging for me in places. But it was doable. You definitely need sure footing and must concentrate solely on the rock. Dogs sometimes have to be carried. We saw someone turn back on the hike with a large dog. Hopefully, you'll catch the last ferry or find a place to stay in Mermurubu. The views, even up to the ridge, are simply wonderful.

This hut is quite small, but very cozy. Inside, you can buy warm drinks and take a good break before heading down. There are also small souvenirs for sale. From the outside, the building looks really beautiful, even when it's frozen.

The top spot in Norway. Even in summer, there's snow there, and the weather can be really bad. But when it's sunny, you can see the surroundings so well. There are also small binoculars, and the hut is right next to it. A place I highly recommend. It's not easy to get there, but it's worth it.

A fantastic mountain with a 360-degree view. The path to the north is easy and, because it's steeper, easier on the descent (easy on the knees). I would recommend ascending via the newly constructed path with steps from the south. However, there are some very exposed sections. It's not safe in wet conditions or even snow/ice.

Here are a few practical tips: Starting point: The most popular route starts at Snøheim (a DNT hut), accessible by shuttle bus from the parking lot in Hjerkinn (in summer). Duration: Approx. 5–7 hours (round trip), depending on fitness and weather. Distance: Approximately 12–14 km total, with approximately 900 meters of elevation gain. Difficulty: Moderate to difficult. Not a via ferrata, but rocky, steep in places, and slippery when wet.
