An interesting, beautifully renovated medieval church. When I was there, it was not possible to climb the tower.

A cycle bridge is being built near the former fortification, which was blown up at the end of the World War.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Stolna cerkev sv. Janeza Krstnika) is the seat of the Archdiocese of Maribor. The first documented mention of a church on this site dates back to 1248, but there must have been a Christian church nearby even before that, probably from 1096. The cathedral is built from blocks of grey and yellowish Slovenian Gorica sandstone. The core of the church is Romanesque, and additions and alterations followed in Gothic, Baroque and 20th century architecture. The bell tower was built between 1623 and 1624. The church became a cathedral on September 4, 1859, when the bishop's seat was moved to Maribor.

Maribor's main bridge over the Drava (popularly known as the Stari Most, or Old Bridge) was built between 1909 and 1913. It replaced a previous wooden bridge a few meters further west. The bridge, which was an important part of the transport connection between Vienna and Trieste in Austria-Hungary, is 274 meters long, 122 meters of which actually span the Drava. Since 2023, the Splavarska Brv pedestrian and cyclist bridge has been docked to the Old Bridge.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy is one of seven basilicas in Slovenia and was the first church with this title in Austria-Hungary in 1906. It is the home church of the Maribor Franciscan monastery. The current church and monastery were built between 1892 and 1900 in neo-Romanesque style and stand on the site of the former Capuchin church, which was built in the 17th century at the request of Count Jakob Khiesl of Maribor. The façade is decorated with two 58-meter-high bell towers, topped with a peaked roof and three-meter-high gilded crosses. The church has three entrances decorated with stone carvings. The most richly decorated is the main portal with a mosaic in the lunette depicting the Annunciation of Mary.

One of the few saints who is highly valued outside of Christianity is San Francesco, known in German-speaking countries as Francis of Assisi. Francis was born in Assisi in 1181/82 and died in 1226. In his youth, the son of wealthy parents, he was more of a bon vivant, but later he turned to Christ. One day he was praying in the half-ruined church of San Damiano, located on a hillside outside the city walls of Assisi, and heard the voice of Christ from the cross, calling on him to "rebuild his church". At first he took this request literally and restored the church building, but later he came to the realization that this was primarily about the church as the community of believers. Francis became a role model for many people, they joined him and the "Order of the Minor Brothers" (Ordo Fratrum Minorum) of Francis of Assisi was founded. Today, there are three male branches in the vast Franciscan religious family: the Franciscans, the Minorites and the Capuchins; and two female branches: the Franciscan sisters and the Poor Clares. In addition, there is the "Third" or "Secular" Order, which is open to women and men who do not take the classic religious vows (poverty, chastity and obedience) and continue to live in their families and professions.

Saint John the Baptist (also John the Baptist), to whom this cathedral (bishop's church) in Maribor is dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold of the Old and New Testaments. His parents are Zacharias and Elizabeth, and after the announcement of the incarnation of God through them, the Mother of God visits her relative Elizabeth, who will give birth to a son in her old age, namely John the Baptist. He is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner/pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches repentance from sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan, where Jesus also comes to be baptized, and is filled with the Holy Spirit who descends upon him from heaven. The memorial day of Saint John the Baptist (Baptist) in the calendar of saints is June 24, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.
