The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Stolna cerkev sv. Janeza Krstnika) is the seat of the Archdiocese of Maribor. The first documented mention of a church on this site dates back to 1248, but there must have been a Christian church nearby even before that, probably from 1096. The cathedral is built from blocks of grey and yellowish Slovenian Gorica sandstone. The core of the church is Romanesque, and additions and alterations followed in Gothic, Baroque and 20th century architecture. The bell tower was built between 1623 and 1624. The church became a cathedral on September 4, 1859, when the bishop's seat was moved to Maribor.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Slovene: Stolnica svetega Janeza Krstnika) in the city of Maribor (Slovenia) is the episcopal church of the Archdiocese of Maribor of the Roman Catholic Church in Slovenia

The church was built in 1248 in the Romanesque style. In the 14th century, the choir was extended and given a Gothic style. The nave was rebuilt in the 15th century, so that the cathedral is now completely Gothic. The baroque chapels were added in the 16th and 18th centuries.

The original bell tower was built by Paolo Porta in 1623. After lightning struck at the end of the 18th century, it was replaced by a classicist 57-meter-high tower. It is accessible and today serves as a lookout tower over the city.

Jozef Holzinger created the choir stalls, which were completed in 1771. Gilded reliefs show scenes from the legend of John the Baptist. The cathedra and a statue of the beatified bishop Anton Martin Slomšek are also located here. He moved the bishop's seat from St. Andrew to Maribor. His grave is in the baroque Chapel of the Cross.

The golden candlesticks in the nave were made in 1686 and donated by the city's butchers', bakers' and goldsmiths' guilds. In the central nave there are two paintings, one of which shows the baptism of Jesus, the other is a copy of Peter Paul Rubens' Descent from the Cross. The artist of the pulpit, made in 1670, is unknown; however, it shows Saints Peter and Paul and the four evangelists. The Mary Help of Christians altar dates from 1699, but the statue of the Virgin Mary that goes with it dates from 1500. The frescoes on the ceiling of the Chapel of the Cross were created in 1775 by the Graz painter Josef Adam Mölk. In 1981 a new organ was installed in the church. Other features include the modern stained glass windows of the presbytery, the altar and the new pulpit. One of the windows is a memorial window and shows the visit of Pope John Paul II to Maribor.

Originally, four bells hung in the tower, two of which were melted down during the First World War. The largest bell broke in 1921 while ringing for the late King Peter I. Four new bells were then ordered, which were then removed during the Second World War. Only the middle bell of the original chime remains, weighing 1660 kg and with the main strike note E flat. In 1989, the Grassmayr bell foundry in Innsbruck cast three new bells weighing 2300 kg, 900 kg and 530 kg and with the corresponding main strike notes C, F and A. The current bells are therefore in the disposition c′ – es′ – f′ – a′. The tower is accessible. You can walk past the bells, visit the former tower keeper's apartment above the bell chamber and enjoy a wonderful view of Maribor and the surrounding area from the tower balcony.
