This bothy is great! There’s a toilet…! A tiny kitchen…! Running water (I’d filter and boil, and add chlorine tablets!). It’s palatial! lol

A very welcome shelter in bad weather on what is a high, exposed and remote mountain in the Carneddau.

The visitor centre is located on the A5, approximately 5 miles south of Bethesda and approximately 4 miles west of Capel Curig, on the western side of Llyn Ogwen. There are a number of facilities including toilets, disabled toilets, an information room, public wifi and a small kiosk selling hot and cold snacks. From the visitor centre you can start a range of walks and climbs in the area. The most popular is the walk to Wales' first ever national nature reserve, the beautiful Cwm Idwal, a glacial lake with a mountainous backdrop. (Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve)

The views down onto Llyn Y Fawr from here is pretty spectacular. This is one of the nicest places in the Brecon Beacons to walk along. Once you have put in the effort to get here, the ridge has a good footpath, there's a nice walled shelter and the views down towards the lake is pretty awesome on a good day.

Pengwern Country House is a beautiful 4 star Bed and Breakfast, set within two acres of wild woods, overlooking the beautiful Lledr Valley, 1 mile from the bustling picturesque village of Betws-y-Coed, the 'Gateway' to the Snowdonia National Park. Ideally situated to explore Snowdonia and North Wales. Just a short walk from Pengwern, you will find Conwy Falls and Fairy Glen. Pengwern has a relaxed county house atmosphere, is traditional but upbeat, with log fires, slate floor, a large sitting room with pictures reflecting its artistic past.

If you're lucky, you'll find the house empty. However, due to its proximity to the street, the house may be used as free accommodation. When we arrived, the house was already occupied by a group of hippies. We were still warmly welcomed. Unfortunately, a group of hikers who arrived later had to sleep outside in tents - in November!

The lake is overlooked by several prominent mountain peaks, especially Picws Du and Waun Lefrith. Waun Lefrith is formed from the sandstones and mudstones of the Brownstones Formation of the Old Red Sandstone laid down during the Devonian period. Its southern slopes are formed from the hard-wearing sandstones of the overlying Plateau Beds Formation which are of upper/late Devonian age.
