There are a lot of elevation changes so some good fitness here will be required. As well as the trails there are a number of fire roads, bridleways and a bike path so great for some gravel riding too.
Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre is one of two parking and start areas for the trails. From here you can ride The Rookie, Blue Scar, Penhydd and Y Wal and W2 mountain bike trails.
There is also a cafe, bike shop and bike hire, toilets and showers. Parking is paid.

Both the singletrack trails contain lots of long technical climbs as well as some long flowy descents. Rocky in places and some incredible views from the top. Both trails are clearly signposted and easy to follow although do check they aren't closed for forestry works before going.
There is also loads of fire roads running throughout the woods which could be incorporated into a ride if the singletracks become too technical.
There is a bike shop, cafe and bike wash, plus pay and display car parking facilities at the bottom where all the trails join up.

To start, the singletrack is fun and pretty mellow, with some flowy corners on slate. It then turns very boggy with a super tough rock section. You'd have to be pretty talented to clear this on a bike so don't feel bad when you get off to push over these!
Next up, you'll ride out of the woods over a series of rock rolls and slabs, before heading out onto the open hillside. Here, the trail winds across the hill revealing more rocky singletrack, so you'll really have to concentrate.
Some huge berms finish off this exhilarating descent before the straight road down to the car park.

There's a great cafe and shop here, and you can watch the daily red kite feeding, which attracts up to 150 of these marvellous raptors.

Handily, there are a few bike racks and plenty of seating here too, as well as a bike wash so you can take your bike home looking fresh! My go-to are the loaded fries for lunchtime, and they make a pretty mean hot chocolate too.

The trail was opened in 2007 and shares short sections with Brechfa's black-rated Raven route.
The blue is predominantly singletrack, with a short fire road transfer between tracks in the middle.

Eight purpose-built mountain bike trails start at the visitor center and range from easy trails for families and beginners to technical trails for experienced mountain bikers. Other facilities for mountain bikers include a bike shop and a skills room where you can develop your riding techniques.
The visitor center is also the starting point for walking and running trails through the Coed y Brenin Forest Park, as well as orienteering courses and geocaching.
Two of the walking routes are suitable for visitors who use an off-road mobility scooter.
There are also children's play areas, a café and plenty of picnic tables.

Check out the Afan Valley Bike Shed - great helpful staff and they sell a selection of souvenirs - tees, hoodies, mud guards & stem caps (always good to support the local shop).

Very helpful staff who kindly refilled our water bottles - also pointed out that on entering the main carpark there is a public tap next to the unit/toilets on the left.

Coed y Brenin forest is managed by Natural Resources Wales. The visitor centre has a large car park, lots of information, a shop, café and toilets. There are several waymarked walking trails from here, as well as miles of forest track and path to explore. Watch out for the mountain biking trails, try not to walk on the bike specific trails.
