Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in Colorado is one of the most famous and highest national parks in the USA. Longs Peak is the highest point at 4,345 meters. The landscape is characterized by mountain forests with aspens, pines, and expansive meadows, where elk are common. Dense coniferous forests and mountain lakes, as well as rugged, treeless plateaus with only low-growing plants, bighorn sheep, and marmots can also be found. A highlight is the Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuously paved mountain pass in North America, leading through the alpine tundra. The most popular hiking area, with its numerous lakes, is the Bear Lake Corridor. The park is open year-round, although many roads and trails are closed during the winter months due to snow or are only accessible with appropriate equipment. Due to its immense popularity, time-slot reservations are often required for access during peak season.

To be honest, it's a bit disappointing that they haven't managed to install a decent summit cross or other special marker on Colorado's highest mountain. Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico are much better at that on their highest mountains.

The High Dune isn't the highest peak of the Great Sand Dunes, but the view is breathtaking. The effort to tackle the sometimes steep sections is worth it. Plenty of water is recommended, as it can get very hot and windy.

Hiking up the dune is a wonderful experience, but you should be in good shape. It can be strenuous to climb the inclines in the loose sand. The view from the dune is magnificent; you can see in every direction.

Truly one of the most beautiful national parks. Note: Reservations are required in many seasons.

Great trip! If you're not used to the elevation, give yourself time to acclimate. I only acclimated for about a week and had to take frequent breaks past tree line, but we'll worth the trip. Barr Trail is also a great trip. "Easier" but longer than this path. 10/10, especially for submitting one of Colorado's 14ers!

If you get up early, it's worth driving up the mountain in your own car. Where else can you drive up a four-thousand-meter peak?
