In the 13th and 14th centuries, this sea arm - ’t Zwyn - was an important waterway to Bruges. This waterway was created after the sea had penetrated the land around the beginning of the Christian era. The cities of Bruges, Damme and Sluis were located on the Zwin and became flourishing trading centres. But the channel became increasingly shallow and eventually unnavigable. Free-standing tower, built in 1398-1401 by Jan Van Oudenaarde; from the 15th century to the first quarter of the 20th century, gunpowder store, see name; in 1665 it was used as a fuller's mill for several years; cellars already used as ice cellars before 1785. The imposing Gunpowder Tower is located next to the Minnewater Bridge and is an impressive 18 meters high. This defensive tower was built in 1397. At the beginning of the 15th century, another smaller tower was built on the opposite side of the bridge. Together, these two towers formed the Waterpoort (Water Gate). The "big tower", as the Gunpowder Tower is sometimes called, has withstood the test of time and was converted into a gunpowder store - hence its name, which is still in use. At the foot of the tower is the Gunpowder Tower Park, a hidden, peaceful place accessible via a metal staircase next to the tower.
