The Zwin is a very special place because there you can still see the natural transition from one biotope to the other: beach and dunes on one side - beach, silt area and grassland on the other.             The unique bird reserve and nature reserve "Het Zwin" extends directly behind the Knokkes dykes to the Dutch municipality of Sluis. Until the 16th century, the area formed an important estuary that connected the formerly important trading cities of Sluis, Damme and Bruges. In 1952 "Het Zwin" was declared the first nature reserve in Belgium. Today the now silted estuary is the most important silt and salt marsh area in Flanders and an exceptional nature reserve that is washed over by sea water every day.

            Due to the impressive variety of native seabirds, the many salt-loving plants and unique endemic animal species, "Het Zwin" is an absolute highlight for every nature lover. The reserve also includes a breeding station and a small bird park, where, among other things, sick birds are cared for and presented to the public.
