For centuries, the mighty Martinstor has guarded one of the old entrances to the old city republic of Wangen and today delights the eye of many people.

The Martinstor is one of the magnificent Wangen city gates

Although lying on the (quiet) district road, it is a beautiful place with a view of the Schleinsee estate with the court chapel and the private Schleinsee. There are also benches above the farm near the water reservoir with a great view of Lake Schlein and Lake Constance, including the Säntis massif.

The route out of the old town towards the south leads along Paradiesstrasse through the Martinstor. The name is derived from the neighboring parish church. A painting of Saint St. Martin can be seen on the side facing the city center. The people of Wangen also call the tower the Lindau Gate. It was first mentioned in 1347. The Martinstor - like the Ravensburger Tor - received its current form in 1608, although its original Gothic character was partially preserved. There are remains of the Gothic painting in the doorway. The various tower rooms have been restored and furnished. They are used by local clubs. The painting facing Paradiesstrasse was done by August and Josef Braun in 1928.
