The stormwater retention basin and the Emscher meadows are wonderful for both humans and animals. There's always plenty of birdwatching to be seen there, and the trails are perfect for cycling and hiking. (Currently limited, as the stormwater retention basin and the riverbank are being rebuilt.) And there are also concrete tubes where you can stay overnight, like at the Bernepark. https://dasparkhotel.net/
