The border runs historically not through the middle of the lake, but approximately through the middle of the original river. One of the last few obvious indications of this is the mouse tower, which represents on the so-called Hengsteyseeinsel not far from Funkenburg the southern bridge tower of a pedestrian bridge, which once crossed the Ruhr. The tower is the remainder of a pedestrian suspension bridge from the Villa Niedernhof on the north bank of Herdeck to the former south bank of the Ruhr with the former knight's residence Haus Niedernhofen in Hengstey. Since the damming of the river to Hengsteysee, the building no longer stands on the shore but is surrounded on all sides by water. The small island with the tower serves as a breeding ground and quarters for birds and bats.
