Really beautiful path along the Ruhr to Hengsteysee

Anyone who drives the full course with all the ramps should have the appropriate driving skills and the necessary respect. Otherwise, it's better to skip it.

Good place to take a break, especially for those coming up from the Ruhr Valley.

The Hengsteysee, a reservoir on the Ruhr between Hagen, Dortmund and Herdecke in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, was completed in 1929 and is one of five reservoirs along the Ruhr. It stretches about 4.2 km long with an average width of 296 meters. The lake serves as the lower reservoir of the Koepchenwerk, a pumped storage power plant, and in addition to the function of biological water treatment and sediment deposition from the Lenne, it also plays an important role for water sports and tourism. Water sports activities such as sailing, rowing and canoeing are popular on Lake Hengstey, and there are several sports clubs located on the shores of the lake. In addition, the DLRG groups from the Dortmund district and the OG Hagen ensure safety on the water. However, swimming in Hengsteysee is not permitted due to the water quality of the Ruhr and health warnings. Recreational use of the lake has also been restricted by the mass proliferation of waterweed since the late 1990s. In addition to water sports, the Hengsteysee offers other attractions such as the “Freiherr vom Stein” tour boat, which runs between Herdecke and the Lenn estuary, and a boat rental at the northern end of the lake. The Hohensyburg, a much-visited castle ruin with a monument, viewing point and casino, is located directly above the lake and is a popular excursion destination.
