Coming from Hanstein Castle on the way to the Teufelskanzel, you have 2 options. The steep path on the right leads to the highest point of the Höhenberg, the Junkerkuppe. It is 511 m above sea level.

The mountain is located in the western part of the Eichsfeld district near the state border with Hesse. Viewed clockwise, it lies between the small towns of Asbach-Sickenberg in the south and south-west, Dietzenrode-Vatterode in the west and north-west, Mackenrode and Henningerode in the north-east. The nearest cities are Bad Sooden-Allendorf (Hessen) (4 kilometers to the south-west) and Heilbad Heiligenstadt (Thuringia) (about 12 km to the north-east). The Wanfried Agreement in 1945 led to a shift in the American-Soviet zone border and with it the later Thuringian-Hessian state border. This is how the towns of Asbach-Sickenberg, Vatterode, Weidenbach and the associated mountain came to Thuringia. The mountain is therefore not part of the historic Eichsfeld. The inner-German border ran south of the mountain and can still be seen at the Schifflersgrund border museum near Asbach-Sickenberg.

Use it as a highlight or as a hint: shortly after the Hohestein in the direction of Hörne, it is about 240 m downhill about 60 meters in altitude (or uphill if you come the other way around). In any case, this is an average of about 25% incline. Very beautiful, spectacular section of the route for North Hesse. It is exhausting dry, but should not be a problem if you are sure-footed. We were there shortly after a heavy shower and it was bordering on no longer fun.

The Junkerkuppe is the highest point on the ridge path between the 🏰Hanstein Castle and the Teufelskanzel 😈.
