View of Dömitz and the Elbe

The bridge offers a great view of the Elbe, Dömitz (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania) and the still standing part of the Dömitz Elbbrücke on the southern bank of the Elbe near Kaltenhof (Lower Saxony). Especially in the morning, during a beautiful sunrise, you can often enjoy spectacular views here.

The Dömitz harbor is located on the Elde river, just before it flows into the Elbe. A pretty little harbor through which the Elbe cycle path also runs. The Dömitz harbor hotel with a panoramic café is located in a former warehouse building.

Hitzacker's old town (on the town island) lies between the Jeetzel and Elbe rivers and is always worth a visit. There are some pretty, old half-timbered houses to see here. You can get a wonderful view of the town island and the Elbe from the vineyard, which is on the opposite (western) side of the Jeetzel from the old town. On the northern side of the town island there is a flood protection wall, behind which lies Hitzacker's marina and meadows about 120-150 meters wide, behind which the Elbe flows.

Hitzacker in Lower Saxony is located at the confluence of the Jeetzel and the Elbe. While the Elbe heights (also: Klötzie), at the south-eastern foot of which is Hitzacker, are already part of the Lüneburg Heath in terms of nature (compare: Drawehn), the lowlands of the old town are part of the Elbe Valley. The city island with half-timbered houses and the customs house built in 1589 are under monument protection.

A good way to get across the Elbe on foot or by bike. Unfortunately, the ferry does not run in the winter months (only from April 1 to October 15) and in summer only until 6 p.m. (the other Elbe ferries in the area run longer, the ferry at Bleckede even shuttles until 10:30 p.m. in summer Clock). The ferry here is only designed for pedestrians and cyclists and is a bit more expensive than the larger ferries that also transport cars (for 1 person with a bicycle, the crossing costs € 2.80, with the Elbe ferry Bleckede, for example, you only pay 1.50 € for 1 person with bike, at the ferry Pevestorf-Lenzen the crossing with bike costs 2.- €). At low tide it can happen that the Elbe ferries fail completely, but in Hitzacker there is usually a replacement boat with a very shallow draft.
