The place was first mentioned in documents in 1158 and received in 1293 the city rights. In 1320 the county Lüchow passed into the possession of the house Braunschweig-Lüneburg. From the late medieval city fortification is today only one tower available, which is used as a bell tower for the originating from the 13th century St. John's Church. A 1555 built city gate, which separated the city center from the Drawehner Vorstadt in the west, was demolished in 1793. Between 1471 and 1473, the wife of Duke Otto V of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, Countess Anna of Nassau-Dillenburg (1440-1513), had the castle built into a castle.
