Haus Sögeln is a typical manor in the former Prince-Bishopric of Osnabrück. The functional, simple main house was built at the end of the 18th century and is surrounded by a park enclosed by moats. Since the middle of the 14th century, there is documentary evidence of a noble habitatio (= fortified dwelling) in the farming community of Sögeln. This is where the landlord lived, on whom the surrounding farms were dependent (serfed). The oldest part of the current complex is probably the gate tower, which may have its origins in a defensive residential tower. The defensive character of this complex, which was still referred to as a castle in the 16th century, is illustrated by the loopholes on the ground floor. Sögeln changed hands frequently over the centuries. In 1793, Friedrich Philipp von Hammerstein zu Equord acquired the estate and had the main house rebuilt. The old building obviously no longer met the demands of the time, both in terms of its representative function and living comfort. After he died in 1802, heavily in debt and without direct heirs, the estate was acquired by the general tax collector Rathgen in 1817. The property passed to the von Rappard family via his stepdaughter. Irmengard von Rappard, who was engaged to the then Lieutenant Paul von Bebeckendorf and Hindenburg, the later President of the Reich, died in Sögeln in 1871 at the young age of 17. Neu Barenau Castle is a two-story castle in Bramsche. The von Bar family had the two-story, neo-Romanesque manor house built between 1857 and 1862 below the Kalkriese mountain by the Hanoverian architect Hermann Hunaeus in the English country house style. They previously lived in the moated castle Alt Barenaue, which is now located on the other side of the Mittelland Canal. The castle is privately owned, so it can only be viewed from the outside.

Great old moated castle, a bit run down, but that's what makes it so fascinating.

History The von Bar family owned a collection of Roman coins found by farmers in the surrounding area. Commissioned by Theodor Mommsen, the Berlin numismatist Julius Menadier recorded 1 aureus, 179 denarii, and 2 aces in 1884. Mommsen then hypothesized that the site of the Battle of Varus had been in the Kalkriese-Niewedder depression on the Kalkriese mountain. The collection was lost during the occupation by Allied troops in 1945.
