The patrol path and the GDR border fortifications are still fairly well defined here, as they truly run like a green belt through the middle of the forest. Walking only on the patrol path is very rough in the long run.

A path secured with railings runs along the edge of the Heldrastein and offers a perfect view of the rather fragile-looking mountain.

From a height of 30 meters, the Tower of Unity offers a panoramic view of the Thuringian Forest, the Rhön Mountains, and the Hoher Meißner. Simply magnificent! 🤩

The von Capellan family had lived in Lüderbach since 1612. The burial site was completed on behalf of Adam Friedrich von Capellan in 1779 after a construction period of three years. In its pyramid shape, it represents a representative of a long tomb tradition. Since this type of mousoleum is rarely found in Northern Europe, one must assume that the tomb was built according to the ideas of the client, whose family came from Austria. From there it was not far to Italy, where burial sites in the shape of a pyramid are often found. Adam Friedrich von Capellan and his sister Frederike von Cornberg found their final resting place in the basement of the monument.

The last two members of the von Capella family are buried there.

Here you can still clearly experience a piece of inner-German border history. The rest bench is right on the column path and when you take a break you can mentally recreate this former time of separation.

The border stone is one of the few originally preserved border stones that showed the course of the former inner-German border. At the same time a relic of memory and warning.
