Here you can really explore the karst landscape. Information boards explain the geological structure of the karst and the Vogelherd Cave. The brave can also explore a look inside the cave.

The Vogelherd cave is a long, horizontal, narrow passage. So far, around 15 m has been explored. The cave offers shelter and sleeping space to around 20 different species of animals all year round.

Narrow forest paths, partly short steep sections and steps to the Vogelherdhöhle with Goldmarie and Pechmarie. You can avoid the paths via wide, light gravel paths (but who wants that 🙈). Very well signposted!

Very interesting educational trail. With many highlights.

Stage 9: Mühlkopf - refuge with Wartburg view Seating group and shelter invite you to linger. The educational trail ends here with a view of the Wartburg. Via the Rennsteig back to the Rangenwiese, this turns into a circular hiking trail. It is easy to find the way back to Stedtfeld in a beautiful landscape.

Stage 8: Earth shaft – ore mining We find the earth shaft, also called ore shaft, 100 m further on the slope. An entrance was built for visitors. The work and techniques of the miners from 500 years ago can still be reproduced in the tunnel. There is the extraction of ore nests with mallets and irons, from ridge mining, in which the ore veins and nests were mined from the bottom of the tunnel to the ridge, the traverses for the scaffolding can still be seen. The tunnel system as a whole indicates ridge mining. A special object is the stair shaft: here you can see the ramming mining. The ore was mined from top to bottom in a staircase and carried upwards in baskets. It is the only remaining stairwell in a wide area and is therefore particularly worthy of protection.
