Not far from the castle is the New Castle on the western branch of the Elde. Construction began in 1619, but work stopped in 1624 and was completed in 1717. It was the residence of the later Duke Christian Ludwig II from 1725 to 1735. Worth seeing are the stucco ceilings restored by Polish specialists.

The spaciously designed palace square is dominated by the basin's cascades, created between 1780 and 1785 by the Bohemian sculptor Rudolf Kaplunger. These sandstone cascades replaced the original wooden cascade. The figurative decorations represent the river gods of the Rögnitz and the Stör. The Ludwigslust Canal was built between 1756 and 1760 as a 26 km long connecting axis, connecting these two rivers and enabling the Baroque water features. In 2008, the cascade underwent its first comprehensive renovation, and now not only the cascade but also the figures literally shine in new splendor. The water features are not only worth seeing in summer; on cold winter days, the watercourses become icy works of art. The Palace Square is also adorned with several beautiful half-timbered buildings, the monument to Frederick Francis I, and the "Old Guardhouse," built as a guardhouse and detention center. From here, you can enjoy one of the city's most beautiful views: from the palace to the Cascades and further to the City Church. The baroque castle is a two-story, three-winged structure in the style of Dutch classicism with a courtyard of honor and stands on hundreds of oak piles. The interior ceilings of the simple country castle are decorated with elaborate stucco work, the stucco area is around 1600 m². In the New Castle there are 32 fireplaces decorated with rosettes, cornices and figures. The castle now houses the Mercure Hotel Schloss Neustadt-Glewe with a restaurant.
