The gorge is approximately 1.5 km long and between three and ten meters wide, only reaching greater widths in a few places. The rock walls reach a height of about 150 m. The Kriopotamos River flows through the gorge, its water level varying throughout the year due to wet winters and dry summers.

Just before entering the town are the Minoan excavations of Pyrgos. Another archaeological site, Fournou Koryfi, the remains of an early Minoan settlement with a total of 90 rooms, is located about 2.5 kilometers further on (towards Ierapetra). In the Myrtos Museum, in addition to artifacts such as pottery from various periods, there is a quite vivid, reconstructed model of the settlement, showing what it might have looked like.

Unlike its purely agricultural neighbors, Myrtos has seen some tourism development since the late 1980s, which, alongside agriculture, now constitutes the main source of income for the small community. The village lies in one of Crete's warmest climate zones. Bananas are grown outdoors in the surrounding area, a practice virtually unique to this part of Crete in Europe. However, these bananas are significantly smaller than those sold internationally and are rarely exported. The primary crop for farmers in Myrtos and the surrounding area is tomatoes.

Myrtos lies 13 km west of Ierapetra, at the mouth of a wide valley filled with greenhouses and citrus groves, crossed by the Kryos River. It is a small seaside village that has experienced some modest development in recent years, which thankfully has not altered its traditional character. The village is situated at the mouth of the impressive Sarakina Gorge, which is well worth a visit.

A wonderfully well-kept, interesting village, quiet and cozy. With an inviting taverna offering good snacks, meals, and wine at affordable prices. We enjoyed the atmosphere.
