The Bismarck Tower on the Domberg in Suhl is a historic observation tower built in 1896 in honor of Otto von Bismarck. It stands at a height of 676 meters and offers an impressive 360° panoramic view of Suhl, the Thuringian Forest, and the Rhön Mountains.

A quiet, historic place with fantastic panoramic views over Suhl and the Thuringian Forest. The small chapel sits enthroned on a rocky outcrop on the cathedral hill, and its frescoes tell the tragic Ottilie legend.

The hype of honoring the "Iron Chancellor" with a fire tower was a good hundred years ago and hardly anyone knows what to do with it anymore. Nevertheless, there are 147 Bismarck towers, but this one is the most beautiful! When you stand in front of it, you can't decide which building is older, the tower or the abandoned cathedral building (...Bismarck has definitely held up better...) but when you open the gate, you don't care and you start to worry about whether it's open or closed. If you grab the handle at eye level and actually let yourself be pushed down, you're very happy! The heavy green wooden door can be opened - the few steps are manageable and hardly worth mentioning. Although the clear, simple staircase with the green railing is also something... Once you get to the top, the wind blows around your ears and you can marvel at the Rennsteig around Goldlauter, the Ringberg Hotel, which is typical of Suhl, the now naked Döllberg and many other scenic landmarks. The Dombergverein in the neighborhood, with solid management, rounds off the whole story. What more do you need to create a perfect day?

This former Premonstratensian monastery, now a proud community in the Hildburghausen district, tells of a rich past. It is a clear morning in September when I catch my first glimpse of the monastery on my bike along the Werratal cycle path. After a fairly steep stretch, the view opens up of the Veßra monastery complex with its Romanesque monastery church of St. Marien. A sight that immediately makes you forget the effort of the climb. The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra, an open-air museum for regional history and folklore, makes history tangible. The monastery complex is a beautiful composition of ruins that whisper stories from times past. The St. Marin collegiate church ruins, once built in the 12th century and unfortunately accidentally burned down in 1939, now stand as a silent witness to past splendor. Visiting the monastery is like traveling through time. Here you can marvel at the half-timbered ensemble, the monastery area with domain buildings and historical agricultural technology. It is a place where you can feel the connection to the past while strolling through the preserved buildings such as the Gate Chapel or the rest of the cloisters. The museum offers a variety of events - garden parties, concerts and more that celebrate Thuringia's cultural heritage. The excursion is rounded off by the small café, where you can take a well-deserved break and let the impressions sink in.

The Premonstratensian monastery of the same name is the town's landmark. Today the Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra, an open-air museum for regional history and folklore, is housed here.

Well signposted and nice to walk with a magnificent view of Suhl and the Thuringian Forest

Nice destination. The arduous ascent is worth it. Magnificent view of Suhl.

The Adlersberg is also easy to reach in winter, because the access road from Wegscheide is kept free and prepared as a winter hiking trail. It is even possible to get there on skis via the Adlersberg trail.
