An elegant pedestrian bridge over the Ryck River at the Greifswald Museum Harbor. A truly successful project and a "must-visit" in Greifswald! Architecture: gmp · Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Excerpt from the contractor sbp: (see https://www.sbp.de/projekt/ryckbruecke-greifswald ) The multi-span steel girder bridge, like a jetty, has many short spans with individual spans of approximately 9 m and a usable width of 3.10 m. The central, rotating, cable-supported section, which is driven by a hydraulic cylinder, consists of a 15 m long superstructure that spans from the mast to the center of the harbor and serves as a passage for historic sailing ships to their berths in the museum harbor.

This structure was part of the medieval fortifications that once encircled Greifswald. The prison tower was first mentioned in the city records in 1329 as "Vangentorm." After the fortifications in the area of the Schützenwall (Riflemen's Rampart) were leveled in the 18th century and the Hansering (Hanseatic Ring Road) was built in the 1970s, the 13.50-meter-high tower remained as a remnant. When the building later became inadequate as a powder tower, the city leased it to the university in 1775. Due to its height and location on the city's edge, the university used the tower for a time as an observatory. The crenellated parapet was added only in the mid-19th century, when the prison tower even had to serve as a public toilet. After extensive preservation and renovation work in the 1990s, the harbor master of the museum harbor was able to move into his office on the ground floor. He is responsible for the organizational management of the harbor, which has over 50 berths reserved exclusively for seaworthy traditional ships. https://www.greifswald.de/de/historisches-erbe/denkmal/backsteingotik/fangenturm/

The Greifswald Zoo is idyllically embedded in a 3.6 hectare park with the swan pond in the middle. Over 100 species of animals feel at home in the enclosures - including well-known domestic breeds such as donkeys, pigs, goats and sheep, but also more exotic companions such as meerkats, kangaroos, porcupines, coatis and raccoons. The zoo is also home to a wide variety of bird species, from zebra finches and budgies to eagle owls, storks and colorful peacocks. The little capuchin monkeys have made themselves comfortable on their new monkey island. https://www.greifswald.info/gehenswertes-5/tierpark/ https://www.tierpark-greifswald.de/

The Credner facilities are located in the immediate vicinity of the Greifswald Zoo. The park was donated by the German geologist and geographer Rudolf Credner, who went down in history as an associate professor at the University of Greifswald. He was also the founder of the Geographical Society of Greifswald, which erected a monument to him in the Credner complex in 1912. You can take beautiful walks in the spacious park. There is also a small pond here, which gives the place an idyllic ambience. https://www.online-destination.de/deutschland/greifswald/credner-anlagen.html#google_vignette

The Fangenturm is one of the oldest buildings in Greifswald. It once belonged to the city fortifications and was initially used as a prisoner's tower, hence the name.

From the bridge, you have a beautiful view of the Ryck River and the anchored ships in all directions. In winter, the bridge can be very slippery, so be careful when walking across it! 😉

For a long time, the Ryck was the main artery of the city of Greifswald. Greifswald had belonged to the Hanseatic League since 1310, and the port was a popular transhipment point, especially for ships from Scandinavia and Russia. The ships came from the Vorhafen in Wyk via the Ryck to the port of Greifswald, but it was often a very tedious affair. Because of the shallow fairway, ships often had to be lightened, and the westerly winds that prevailed here made it difficult to sail to the port. So the sailing ships and also the first machine-driven ships were towed from the outer harbor in Wyk to the port of Greifswald. Shipping in Greifswald flourished in the mid-19th century. The Ryck's fairway was dredged and with the demolition of the fortifications more space was created for the port. At that time, the Greifswald merchant fleet consisted of up to 50 seagoing ships, mostly brigs, the larger ones sailed to the Black Sea, to America, the East Indies and China. However, the conditions were so unfavorable that in the 19th century the port of Greifswald lost its importance, the port developed into an inland port, into which only smaller cargo ships used inland traffic (summarized by the information boards along the Ryck)
