The wrought iron gate is already an eye-catcher. Prince Georg built the building as a widow's residence for his mother Hermine from 1893 to 1896. A beautiful English landscape park surrounds the palace.

Foundations of a mysterious castle

Baum Castle was built in 1760/1761 by order of Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg Lippe. The basement of the previous building was used for this. Its dimensions of 8 by 21 meters determined the floor area. The building is a creation of late baroque classicism. An English landscaped garden with a small pond is attached to the castle. Behind it is a grotto complex surrounded by two portals. These early baroque portals were erected in 1758 and probably created between 1604 and 1606 for the ground floor hall in Bückeburg Palace. In 1776 Wilhelm zu Schaumburg Lippe had a pyramid-shaped family mausoleum built in a park area near the palace, the surfaces of which are structured in steps. Its entrance forms an east-facing portal in the form of a portico. Ornamental plants were originally placed on the steps of the pyramid. The mausoleum used to be in a landscaped garden area with hedges, which later developed into a wooded park with avenues. The castle is said to owe its name to a barrier at which customs rights were enforced not far from the border of the small principality. Until March 31, 2021, the castle served as a conference and leisure center for the Protestant youth of the regional church of Schaumburg-Lippe and was an educational center for seminars, educational events, vacation and weekend camps. In the castle itself there is a dining room, a common room, the kitchen and sleeping accommodation on the upper floor. An outbuilding built later provides additional sleeping facilities for up to 40 guests. In February 2022, a new provider took over the educational facility.
