Luccaburg Castle was an early medieval lowland castle near Loccum. The tower hill castle of the Counts of Lucca, dating from the 11th/12th century, is recognizable as a massive, round earthen mound. Parts of the 2 m wide circular wall are preserved. A Count Burchard of Lucca is mentioned in documents around 1113 and 1130. His daughter, Beatrice of Lucca, married Count Wilbrand of Hallermund, who thus became his successor and heir. In 1163, he donated the surrounding land to Cistercian monks for the establishment of Loccum Abbey. Luccaburg Castle can only be reached on foot or by bike. Landestrost Castle was built between 1573 and 1584 by Duke Erich II of Brunswick-Lüneburg as a representative residential building in the Weser Renaissance style. The castle is one of the most beautiful buildings in this style. In the historic official garden at the castle, you can see the remains of a baroque garden, the 250-year-old hornbeam hedge, also known as the green vault, and a well-preserved fortress wall/bastion.

The Luccaburg gave the present-day town of Loccum its name. The castle complex was once located on a circular hill. The actual ruins of the castle now lie half a meter below ground level. The walls that can be seen today are a memorial to Prior Franzen. The castle itself had probably already been abandoned when the monks from Volkenroda settled in this area and founded their monastery here. The site was given to them in 1163 by the then lord of the castle, Wulbrand von Hallersmund.

Landestrost Castle is a castle complex in the Weser Renaissance style, which was built between 1573 and 1584 in Neustadt am Rübenberge in Lower Saxony. Integrated into a fortification together with the city, this resulted in a city fortress typical of the 16th century. The palace was the representative residential and administrative seat of its builder, Duke Erich II of Brunswick-Lüneburg. During the construction period from 1574, he renamed the town of Neustadt Landestrost, which was reversed after his death in 1584. The castle was built in the flat country on a natural elevation, the "Rouvenberg", near the Leine. The elevation probably gave the place its later suffix "am Rübenberge". The castle was built on the foundations of a castle first mentioned in 1320, which was called "castrum Rouvenberg" in 1443. Erich I was born on it in 1470. A fire in 1563 largely destroyed this castle. The construction of the later, fortified castle, which began in 1573, served to represent the power of its builder, Duke Erich II, in the northern area of his principality. However, it also had practical reasons, such as the surveillance of a passing trade route and the shipping of ships. He seldom stayed at the castle, because he traveled through Europe as a mercenary leader on military campaigns and had already moved his residence to Hann. Münden relocated. It was customary for this group of people to invest the fortune gained in this way in generous and representative buildings. Numerous foreign architects and craftsmen were involved in the construction. Based on stonemason's marks found on the building, it is assumed that more than 200 stonemasons were employed here. The name Landestrost should express that it was a trusting resting place of the territory of the Principality of Calenberg. However, the duke died in Italy in 1584 before the castle was completed, leaving no legitimate heirs. Source: Wikipedia
