Great view from up here and an ideal place for a break

The enchanting Meerfelder Maar lies in the middle of the largest Maar funnel in the Eifel. This maar is at least 30,000 years old and takes up about half the space of the maar funnel. The idyllic village of Meerfeld nestles against the steep southern slopes of the other half.

You just have to go up to this summit cross, it's a pity that there is no summit book.

Prior reservation is definitely recommended! Because: The flood in July 2021 caused great damage in the Eifel - the smallest rivers developed into raging torrents within a very short time. This is also the case with the Heidsmühle in Manderscheid. The masses of water devastated the entire restaurant and bar area, the terrace and the gardens. Only the hotel rooms on the second floor were spared from the flood. All floors and wall coverings in the restaurant had to be removed, making it impossible to operate a restaurant. But as we all know, necessity is the mother of invention - a solution for a few months was needed. Tobias Stadtfeld, who is now the fifth generation to run the Heidsmühle together with his family, contacted an alpine hut rental company in Bavaria in search of a suitable temporary solution. Within a very short time, the EIFEL host and the rental company agreed, so that just three days later the low loader with the rustic wooden hut was on its way to the Eifel. After a few hours, the comfortable alternative accommodation in Manderscheid was ready for occupancy. Up to 80 people can sit in the rustic wooden hut. Tobias Stadtfeld said: “Our guests are thrilled - the response is great. Our events, for example on New Year's Eve or the crime dinner, were well attended - given the current conditions. We're really glad."

An impressive valley, full of beauty and with many hiking opportunities

The observation tower on the Dietzenley offers an impressive view of the landscape of the Vulkaneifel. About 2500 years ago there was a Celtic housing estate on the Dietzenley with pasture areas, which were protected against attacks by ramparts up to 9 m high and 4 m wide.

I live about 3 km as the crow flies from the Lieserquelle. The Lieserpfad is a beautiful hiking trail with many panoramas and impressions. It also includes a path along the maars near Daun and Schalkenmehren. If the 3 stages are too long for you, you can divide the tour differently and make 4 or 5 stages out of it. The Maardorf Schalkenmehren has a lot to offer, especially the gastronomy here is particularly recommended.
