The Waldsee in Lindenberg in the Allgäu is one of the highest German moor lakes (765.4 meters). The lake was dammed in the Middle Ages for fish farming and used to operate a sawmill from the mid-18th to the early 20th century. During this time the lake wore i.a. the name saw pond. In 1905, tourist development began with the construction of a bathing establishment and an inn, and in the 1920s the name was changed to Waldsee for better marketing. In 1952, the restaurant got its current appearance during the conversion to a hotel according to plans by Ernst Pfeiffer. Since then, there have been paintings about the history of Lindenberg in the guest rooms inside. Large parts of the shore were redesigned between 2006 and May 2008, replacing the old bathing facility on the north shore with a new building on the same site that is accessible free of charge. Since then, a moor nature trail around the lake has provided information about ecological and economic factors relating to the moor and the peat extraction that has been practiced here for a long time. As a peat extraction area, the Waasemoos around the Waldsee played an important role in the energy supply of Lindenberg's production companies for a long time. As of April 2021, access to the sunbathing lawn of the outdoor pool is free of charge. Unfortunately we didn't have any bathing suits in our backpacks.
