Around 50 tons of sandstone were used to create the magnificent animal, which has since then looked out towards the lake from its three-tiered pedestal. So far, so good - for many decades, the statue delighted guests and locals alike with its proud, stoic composure. But in the background, a storm was brewing, which not only affected the lion, but also houses, ships and even the railway. In 1962, Deutsche Bahn decided to merge its Lake Constance fleet into "Schiffsbetriebe GmbH". The company was based in Konstanz. Almost 40 years later, the railway workers decided to concentrate on their core business and sell the subcontractor on the water to the Konstanz municipal utilities. And that's where the problems began - because with the "Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe" all the port and land areas were sold. In addition to twelve ports, 15 ships and numerous properties, the people of Konstanz suddenly owned a lion. THE lion. Knowing that the Bavarian port was owned by Baden was one thing, but that the heraldic animal should now roar in a foreign language was too much for the people's blue-and-white soul. The parties took positions and tough negotiations began: the city of Lindau, the Bavarian Ministry of Transport and the Konstanz public utilities stepped in to resolve the dispute. The Konstanz residents generously offered to release the lion for the symbolic price of just one euro. But who would cover the costs of maintaining the animal? And why should it watch over "foreign waters"? The people of Lindau wanted everything - including their port. For many, it was about more than just the 46,000 square meters of space: the secret coat of arms of the city, the heart of the port, Bavarian pride - there was a lot at stake. Several rounds of talks failed because the price expectations of both sides were far apart. The dispute lasted for seven years and a legal dispute seemed inevitable - until in October 2009 the mayors of both cities finally reached an agreement: The city of Lindau would become the owner of the entire port, and the Konstanz municipal utilities would have the usage rights for their subsidiary, the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe. On April 12, 2010, the dispute between the cities ended with the signing of the contract in Lindau's town hall - the lion and the port were worth 1.8 million euros to the city. In 784 the name “wazzarburuc” appeared for the first time in a document from the monastery of St. Gallen. In the 10th century, this island fortress served as a refuge for the monasteries of St. Gallen. Traces of the excavations carried out in 1993 indicate this.[7] This document mentions a church of Saint George, which belongs to the monastery of St. Gallen. Until 1280, the Lords of Kisslegg, as ministerials of the monastery, were responsible for the rule of Wasserburg, then the rule went to the Lords of Schellenberg for 500 silver marks. They expanded Wasserburg into a fortress as a St. Gallen fiefdom (until 1826).
