The river is very slow

The old four-bay arched bridge over the Altmühl near Pfünz is considered one of the most important historical stone bridges in Bavaria. It was probably built in the 15th century.

With four massive barrel vaults, the medieval bridge, constructed from massive stone blocks, spans the Altmühl River. It was built around 1486 under Bishop Wilhelm of Reichenau. The name Pfünz – Pontus – suggests a significant predecessor bridge. An important Roman road connection from Pfünz Castle to the Burgus in Burgsallach gave this river crossing particular importance. The bridge was rebuilt between 1822 and 1838, and subsequently, a bridge toll was levied. Closed to car traffic, the bridge is now a cycle path, and many enjoy lingering at this historically significant river crossing in its romantic setting. And it's always a fantastic photo opportunity!
