The steep hiking trail winds its way up to Maus Castle via several switchbacks. And from there, it climbs a good bit further. The effort is rewarded by absolutely breathtaking viewpoints.

We were there at the end of April, and the many different shades of green were somewhat reminiscent of Galicia. Please note that there are hardly any trash cans along the way, so please take your trash with you. There is a wine shop below the castle.

Little clever shit about the superlatives from what I've read: Burghausen Castle is the longest castle in Germany and even the world. After Ehrenbreitstein, Rheinfels is the largest castle/fortress on the Middle Rhine

You can reach the vantage point either via a steep climb from St. Goarshausen or via an easy footpath from Patersberg. There you can park your car at the bus stop turning point and enjoy the view after a few hundred meters without much effort.

From the pavilion you have a wonderful view of Katz Castle to the left, Rheinfels Castle diagonally opposite on the left bank of the Rhine and Maus Castle with its transmission mast to the right.

Rheinfels Castle is the largest surviving castle ruin on the Rhine. Although time has left its mark on the walls, you can still imagine what the magnificent fortress must have looked like. Part of the castle is now a museum where you can learn about the interesting history of the place. From St.Goarshausen on the Rheinsteig to Katz Castle (visits not possible) and on to the district of Heide. Very nicely situated bank just before the sports field with a view of Katz Castle and the other side of the Rhine with Rheinfels Castle. With the wheel / MTB you can drive a small road directly behind the restaurant Hermanns Mühle.

The climb is worth it. The view is wonderful. There are few shady sections on the way there, so the cottage is a nice rest stop for a break.

Great castle with a beautiful view. Admission currently costs 6 euros. The underground passages can only be visited if you take a guided tour.
