Schanzenkopf Castle is a rampart fortress that is almost square in shape. There is a circular depression on both ends. These may be the foundations of two defensive towers. The purpose of the structure is not entirely clear. It is possible that Schanzenkopf Castle served to secure a trade route. The second possibility is that Schanzenkopf Castle was the counterpart to Rannenburg, which is 900 meters away. A third possibility is that Schanzenkopf Castle is the castle of the noble Schelriss family from Wasserlos.
