An ok national trust place needs better sign post

It is well worth visiting the castle and gardens. I was particularly impressed by the rock garden.

Sedgwick House was built in 1868 for William Henry Wakefield, who owned a local gunpowder factory. The family moved out of the house shortly before World War II, and it was then used by Lancashire County Council as a school for children with special needs. It's the highest peak in the Howgills but the top of the Calf is pretty unexciting - its a rounded summit with motorway paths. The best feature of the hill is hidden away to east - the huge Cautley Spout waterfall. Although some maps don't show a path all the way to the summit from the east, there's a decent path on the ground, and this is by far the most interesting way to climb the hill

Best way I think is to go down Bowderdale

The shelter at the top of Scout Scar is locally known as "The Mushroom". It was built in 1912 as a memorial to King George V. The structure includes a toposcope indicating the Central Fells and other landmarks.

The centre pole on the Mushroom lines up with the map on the inside so you know what you’re looking at in the surrounding area! So cool!

Sizergh as a number of different gardens including a mirror lake, colourful herbaceous border, working kitchen garden, apple orchard and limestone rock garden.

Good cafe to grab a tea, coffee and cakes. Good facilities. It is managed by the National Trust. And has a good shop to buy presents for family and friends.

The Calf at 676m is the highest point in the Howgill Fells. The trig pointed summit has great views in all directions, especially towards the lake district in the west and the Yorkshire three peaks in the southeast. It's a good running summit with an ascent from Sedbergh or via Cautley Spout.

Sizergh Castle is a medieval fortified manor house. The National Trust own and manage the castle including an amazing collection of objects that were collected by 30 generations of the Stickland family. There is also a wonderful garden, shop, cafe and wider estate to explore. NT members are free to enter, non-members must pay for parking and entry.
