Hadrian’s Cycleway Route has some quite challenging hill climbs but the views and historical sites well worth the effort

I parked around here for completing the hike up to Barrow. The village is cramped and when it's busy, there won't be ample parking.

There’s certainly something off with the size of this sign in relation to the size of the animal it is warning you of. Also never seen cows in this part of the common.

This is a stunning, quiet lane running from Hawes End to the Grange, going past Borrowdale Rainforest National Nature Reserve, overlooking Derwent Water. This is pristine Lake District scenery with lush green undulating wooded scenery with a backdrop of high peaks. All this with some good quiet tarmac underneath your tires. Awesome piece of road!

This is the place that gave the town its name, where the River Cocker joins the much larger River Derwent. With a small but well stocked garden in the summer and several seats, this is a contemplative spot.

Beware of free descending in the wet - it *appears* a shallow descent but you pick up speed quickly and there are some (otherwise lovely) sharp/blind turns.

2018 Nominee in The Woodlands Trust Tree of the Year competition. It should be obvious how the Drunkard Rowan, also known as the Windswept Woman of Caldbeck Common, got its name. The tree’s trunk is bent at an incredible 90° angle, amazingly without having snapped. The common it grows on is boggy and exposed, tough conditions for any tree. Over the course of its life, the rowan has gradually sunk and bent as it has grown, thanks to the high winds it suffers and the soft clay deposit on which it sits. Unsurprisingly given the conditions, it has very few neighbours, making it stand out even more against the harsh landscape.

Lovely place to stop for a drink and food

Running south from Keswick, Borrowdale Road traces the eastern edge of the beautiful Derwent Water. It's a lovely scenic stretch, with views of the lake and mountains, giving it an almost Swiss-like feel. The road can get busy at certain times, but generally it's fairly quiet to cycle along.

Great spot to stop for tea, scones, light lunch, or ice cream on a long hike!

Ambio café is pretty nice but same unspeedy service. Worth the wait though

Fantastic loop around the national park. Works well as a three day tour by starting in Penrith and overnighting in Eskdale and Kirkby Lonsdale.

Set in a renovated station with a full size replica steam train, Bassenthwaite Lake Station cafe also serves good coffee, with bike-friendly outdoor seating Open every day 9-5.

Fantastic views of the Northern Fells with so many options for fantastic routes to all corners of Northern Cumbria.

Amazing views across the Solway Firth to Criffel Hill in Scotland and out across the Irish Sea. Nice long coastal road section with plenty of opportunities to jump off and go and sit on the beach.
