Here you enter a place steeped in history: finds from prehistoric times prove a settlement as early as the Neolithic Age. The oldest pottery sherds found here date from the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The ramparts on the largest rock of the Helfenstein, with an artificial ditch about 100 meters long from the 12th/13th century, indicate a former high medieval castle.

The imposing dam forms the second largest reservoir in Germany in terms of area and the third largest in terms of volume. The wall is now over a hundred years old, 48 meters high and 400 meters long. It is always freely accessible and offers a great view of the surroundings.

The water bubbles over the cascades, the Steinhöfer waterfall, the Devil's Bridge and falls over the aqueduct and the Peneus cascades down to the castle pond. A true natural wonder - found by the Celts, who probably built a place of worship here on the Helfensteinen. In the High Middle Ages there was a castle on the 510 m high Helfenstein. At the Helfensteinen you can't help but be amazed! In addition to the mighty basalt rocks, the view is absolutely fascinating! The Helfensteine can hardly be put into words - you simply have to have been there and walked over the stones and felt the fascinating atmosphere up there! By the way: The Helfensteine were also the location for Ostwind 1 & 5 and the unlimited freedom they radiate in the films also radiates in reality! Sturdy shoes are a must here. Ascent and descent are, at least from the café side, not without problems! A detour from the rear up to the Helfenstein is a little gentler.
