Petronell Castle was first built in the 11th century. The four-winged castle complex that still exists today was planned by Dominio Carlone (around 1615 - 1679) on behalf of the Abensperg-Traun family. The castle is decorated with frescoes by Caprovo Tencalla. The castle was owned by the Abensperg and Traun families for 17 generations and was sold to a private investor in 2006 and can therefore only be viewed from the outside. Rohrau Castle, whose origins are uncertain and which was first mentioned in 1240, came into the possession of the Harrach family in 1524, who converted it into a Renaissance moated castle. The history of the castle and the Harrach family is closely linked to the Habsburg monarchy, in which the family played an important political role. After destruction in the Second World War and extensive renovation work starting in 1966, the castle was reopened in 1970 and the family collection was presented to the public.
