The community of Loretto itself has fewer than 500 inhabitants, but an estimated 100,000 pilgrims are counted here each year. The biggest pilgrimage days are the "Great Women's Day" (Assumption of Mary) on August 15th, when between 15,000 and 20,000 people come to Loretto, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary on September 8th, and the "Croatian Sunday", the pilgrimage of the Burgenland Croats, on the third Sunday in September. Many of the pilgrims still come on foot today. It seems that I picked a special day for my visit today. I was completely alone, not a soul to be seen.

The inscription inside the Donatic Chapel reads: Prayed Merciful Eternal God, who has all the elements and creatures in your hand and arranges everything according to your pleasure. The Donatic Chapel rises on a small hill about 1 km west of the village on the road to Wasenbruck. The beautiful octagonal, open chapel with pillar arcades and a fine-lined hipped dome roof dates from 1747. Inside there is the baroque statue of St. Donatus on a stone base with an inscription. Tradition tells us about the construction of the chapel: Maria Theresia once drove from Vienna to Mannersdorf during a thunderstorm. On the hill between Wasenbruck and Mannersdorf, a lightning strike killed one of the wagon's draft horses.
